Last week on the Black Businesses Matter podcast, we had the distinct honor of spotlighting an extraordinary voice in leadership and transformation: Dr. Carmen Bell-Ross.

A proud native of Detroit, Dr. Carmen has dedicated her life to understanding people—what drives them, what connects them, and how they grow. Her global journey has taken her across continents—from the favelas of Brazil to the villages of Kenya, from the bustling streets of Tokyo to the heart of Havana. She’s studied social issues and immersed herself in diverse cultures in countries including South Africa, China, Japan, Cuba, Vietnam, Guatemala, and Italy. These experiences have equipped her with a rare cultural fluency and a deeply human approach to leadership.

Affectionately known simply as “Dr. Carmen,” she is a powerhouse in leadership consulting, workforce development, executive coaching, and diversity, equity, and inclusion. With over 20 years of experience designing and delivering transformational professional development programs, she helps organizations and leaders align their values with the outcomes they seek. Whether she’s training executives, advising on strategic initiatives, or facilitating impactful workshops, Dr. Carmen brings a unique blend of intellect, empathy, and real-world wisdom.

She is especially passionate about ACTION and PERSONAL OWNERSHIP—two principles that underpin her work with leaders across industries, including automotive manufacturing, healthcare, banking and finance, law enforcement, local government, and non-profits. Her approach is grounded, strategic, and always people-centered.

Dr. Carmen’s educational background is as impressive as her professional accomplishments. She holds bachelor’s degrees in International Studies and Spanish, a master’s degree in Educational Psychology, and has completed rigorous doctoral studies in both Educational Psychology and Management & Leadership. She’s not just a thought leader—she’s a doer, a guide, and a catalyst for meaningful change.

In her featured podcast episode, Dr. Carmen dropped several key insights for business owners and aspiring leaders:

  • Know your numbers – Understanding your metrics is foundational to growth.
  • Leverage tech and automation – Use tools that free up your time and streamline your efforts.
  • Know your purpose – Your “why” should guide your work, not the hustle.
Bonus tip: Hustle culture is a trap – Sustainability matters more than speed.
